I T WAS NOT THE COLOR they envisioned hanging from their necks when they arrived in Chelyabinsk, Russia, but the U.S. Under-18 Men's National Team can wear their silver medals with pride after capturing a record 15th consecutive medal at the 2018 IIHF Under- 18 Men's World Championship. Gunning for its fourth gold medal in its past five tournaments, the U.S. came up just short after falling 3-2 to Finland, the only team to stake its claim to gold over the U.S. team's run. This was the fourth time the two coun- tries have faced off for U18 gold, with the Americans winning the three previous con- tests (2006, 2015 and 2017). "I was proud of the way they represented our country and I told them to wear that silver medal with pride," said Seth Appert, head coach of the U.S. Under-18 Team. "It wasn't what we came for but still, you have to respect the tournament and your opponents and to put that medal around your necks with pride." As a testament to the potency of the National Team Development Program, the U.S. has won seven of the last 10 U18 World Championships. This year's team didn't go down without a fight as sniper Oliver Wahlstrom's last-second shot sailed just wide of the Finnish goal. "It was a great game," Appert said. "They outplayed us early, we outplayed them in the middle and it came down to who could make a big play in the third period. We had our opportunities."
