BLUES and Blue Lines Matt Lashoff's Heart May Still Be In Hockey, But He Has Music In His Soul H ockey has complete ownership of Matt Lashoff's heart. It's what he has put every ounce of himself into from the time he was a young player growing up in East Greenbush, N.Y. T put o it mildly, it has certainly been worth the effort. Lashoff was the 22nd overall selection by the Boston Bruins in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft and has appeared in 74 NHL games over a pro career that will soon enter its seventh season. Yes, hockey has Lashoff's heart, but something else occupies considerable real estate in his soul. Over the years, Lashoff has developed into a fairly accomplished musician. In 2011, Lashoff's musical side took on a more serious tone when the defenseman, whose NHL stops include Boston, Tampa Bay and Toronto, released a full-length album entitled Living on Heart. The album, on which Lashoff wrote most of the songs, was the culmination of years of playing and writing music, going all the way back to his childhood. "Music was around a lot more than hockey," Lashoff recalls of his childhood. "My dad was in bands since I can 20 October . 2013 remember and I remember going to small bars and watching him sound check and all that kind of stuff when I was just a little kid." "My dad's band used to have practice in our garage, so I used to be able to go out there and bang around on anything that was around," Lashoff fondly remembers. Hockey became the foremost passion in Lashoff's life, however, and it didn't take long for his career to really take off. At 16, after a year at Avon Old Farms prep school, he joined USA Hockey's National Team Development Program. But even as hockey was getting very serious, music still figured prominently into his life. "That first year at the [NTDP], we had so much going on and it was hockey all the time," he says. "At some point you need to decompress and need to do something to pull yourself away and recharge your batteries to be able to focus back on the hockey. That's when I USAHOCKEYMAGAZINE.COM By Chris Peters started songwriting." Over the years he found a comfortable balance between the two. "[Music] has always taken away some of the stress that I may have from the hockey," Lashoff says. "And the music, if I was having a stressful thing The 22nd overall pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, Matt Lashoff has made a name for himself both on the ice and in the recording studio.
