Use Promo Code: CHP818 W hen Irv Tiahnybik introduced his son, Lex, to hockey, it opened up a whole new world for his hearing- impaired son. But when he learned that Lex was being teased by other players and even coaches, Tiahnybik took matters into his own hands. That's when he contacted his friend, Chicago Blackhawks legend Stan Mikita, and the American Hearing Impaired Hockey Association was born. Forty-five years later, Tiahnybik's dream is still going strong as the AHIHA Deaf and Hard of Hearing Hockey School recently hosted the 45th annual weeklong hockey school for deaf and hard of hearing athletes at the Edge Ice Arena. From its first year with just 30 players, the school has grown to five teams and more than 100 players on the ice. To date, nearly 3,000 deaf and hard of hearing athletes have learned to love the sport thanks to the generosity of Tiahnybik, who passed away in 2011, and the countless volunteers who keep his dream alive. The group also helps players get hearing aids, speech and language therapy, auditory training, counseling and diagnostic evaluations. Many alumni have gone on to the U.S. Deaflympic Hockey Team, helping win one gold and two silver medals over the years. More than just developing good hockey players, the AHIHA Deaf and Hard of Hearing Hockey School helps kids develop confidence to tackle longer term life goals. "We are very proud of the accomplishments of our players and coaching staff," said Kevin Delaney, AHIHA president and Chicago Blackhawks skating coach, "and are looking forward to serving the deaf and hard of hearing community for many years to come."
